Winter Weather

A winter storm can take you by surprise.  We want to make sure you are prepared for the worst. Whether it is before or after the storm, be sure to stick with us to find out how to stay safe this season. Remember to listen to this station and check back to this site for local and up-to-date information about winter storms and school closings.

Listen to your radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for weather reports and emergency information.

Drive only if it is absolutely necessary.

Have a mechanic check to make sure your car is ready for the winter storms.

Check pipes for freezing and make sure your utilities are working.

Store proper food and bottled water.

Check for any damage to the outside of your house. Mostly fallen tree limbs or fallen gutters.

Try to clear a path in your driveway or walkway.

Call and make sure nearby friends and family are OK.

Continue to monitor the weather forecast, this may only be a break in the storm.

Report any major damage to the police or proper authorities.

If you do have to drive during a winter storm you should make sure you have the following five items in your car. These can help you survive the elements if you are stranded during a harsh storm.

Blankets
Having extra blankets in the car can help you and your family stay warm if your car gets stuck on the side of the road.
Window Scraper
Driving blind isn't safe no matter what time of the year it is. Make sure you deice your windows thoroughly before any trip.
Cell Phone
No one is going to know that you got stuck if you can't call. Make sure you have a working and charged cell phone during any car ride this winter. A car charger is also handy to have in your glove box.
Extra Winter Clothing
Extra clothing such as scarves, mittens and hats can help you stay warm inside your car. Having this will also help if you have to exit your car in the cold.
Emergency Kit
An emergency first aid kit and car kit may be able to save your life or get you back on the road. Road flares, jumper cables and any other medical equipment could get you out of the cold faster.
